Introduction:

Every nation constantly equips itself with betterment and progress in the fortes of education, agriculture and industrial development, tailored to the needs of an evolving society and changing psyches of citizens, combined with the need to be excellent at par and obtain a level of parity similar to nations across the globe. Innovation and improvisation are two concrete pillars on which the education system and the policy of any country is built. A major step in that direction is the formulation and implementation of the New Education Policy in 2020.

One of the groundbreaking initiatives under the NEP 2020 is the introduction of the APAAR ID, which is a digital ID card for students studying in private and government schools or colleges across India. It was launched by the Ministry of Education to create unique ID numbers for school students across India. The APAAR ID, also known as the ‘One Nation One Student ID Card’, will be beneficial for all students as their complete academic data, such as rewards, degrees, scholarships, and other credits, will be transferred digitally to the APAAR ID. The full form of APAAR ID is the ‘Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry’.

The APAAR ID card aims to enable students to collect and access their academic credits, degrees and other information online. It is a lifelong identification number for students that tracks their academic progress and achievements from pre-primary to higher education, all in one place. The card will be linked to the student’s Aadhaar ID but will not replace it or cannot be used alternatively. The APAAR card will be issued in addition to the already existing Aadhaar ID of the students. The APAAR number will track the student’s academic journey and achievements and make transfer from one school to another easier. This is a measure introduced to simplify migration and transfer processes without hassles of long documents.

The APAAR ID is a significant step towards an organized and accessible academic experience for students. It will simplify verification of credentials, access to government benefits like scholarships and other services, and easy transfer between schools and universities.

Background:

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a comprehensive framework for the development of education in India. It aims to provide universal access to quality education from pre-primary to higher education by 2030. Some common issues faced by innumerable students across India are the transfer and migration from schools and colleges on an inter-state and inter-city level and the accessibility to resources like distance-learning courses, scholarships, fellowships and training programmes. Not to mention the long formalities of documents submissions, maintaining records and different protocols at different colleges and schools and institutions. Thus, to resolve and ease these problems faced by students and their parents, the introduction of APAAR ID is one of the key initiatives under the NEP. It acts as a one-stop-shop for all the verified details and academic records, also reducing the scope of fraudulent practices on both ends. It also encourages schools, universities and other institutions to follow a uniform framework and procedure for the above-mentioned formalities.

Benefits:

The transparent and easy-going framework of the APAAR ID scheme can prove beneficial for both ends : students and administration systems across the country in the following ways.

Easy transfer between schools and universities: The APAAR ID card will make it easier for students to transfer from one school or university to another without losing their academic records or achievements. It also de-complicates the process of submitting different sets of specific documents in the places of application or admission.

Simplified verification of credentials: The APAAR ID card will simplify the process of verifying a student’s academic credentials, such as degrees, scholarships, and other credits, by providing a single digital platform for all academic data. Schools and colleges no longer have to maintain huge files and hardcopy documents of each student, thus reducing the administrative workload. This digital storage also minimises probability of fake documents and unathorised paperwork or transactions during admission or transfers of students.

Unique identification number: The APAAR ID card provides a unique identification number that tracks a student’s academic journey and achievements from pre-primary to higher education. This makes it easier for schools and universities to keep track of a student’s progress and achievements.

Access to government benefits: Students with an APAAR ID card will have easier access to various government benefits like scholarships and other services that require proof of academic credentials.

Reduction in fraudulent practices: The APAAR ID leaves little scope for any malpractices during the admission process or transfer process and provides transparency in the student’s records. This also eliminates any probabilities of misplacing and loss of important documents after submission.

Registration Process:

The registration process for the APAAR ID is simple and secure, enabled on the Academic Bank of Credits Portal. One can go to this website and login to their Digilocker account after tapping on the ‘My Account’ option and selecting ‘student’. If one does not have a digilocker account, it can be easily created on the phone through the Digilocker App by providing your AADHAR card number and registered phone number. After prompted, the AADHAR details can be shared and verified for KYC verification. After successfully logging in to your profile, you can enter your academic, educational and even co-curricular achievements including the school, universities, courses, examination results, etc. After saving these details, the user will receive a confirmation message with a unique APAAR ID. Schools and colleges must start the registration for APAAR ID cards for their students only after obtaining the parent’s consent. Parents can also withdraw their consent at any given point in time. This generated unique APAAR ID serves as the identity of your education and academic career throughout your life.

Conclusion:

It is no secret that the policy-making behind the APAAR ID scheme is indeed a thoughtful and well-structured one. This act can be seen as a catalyst for positive change, enabling governments and schools-colleges to monitor dropout and enrollment rates. However, there also have been some privacy concerns on behalf of parents and students about the probable leaking of their private information to external sources. The government has reassured strict confidentiality of information without any wrong use or intervention of third-party entities, except for the authorized bodies that regulate administration in schools and colleges. Thus, the APAAR ID can serve profitable in enhancing the educational system of the country, easing out the complicated procedures for students and eliminating any problematic or fraud practices.
