Why in News? 

Prime Minister of India will launch the Aravalli Green Wall initiative on World Environment Day 2025 to rejuvenate the ancient Aravalli range. 

What is the Aravalli Rejuvenation Campaign? 

A centrally led environmental restoration initiative by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), aiming to revive and reforest the 700-km-long Aravalli Range. 

Primary Objectives 

  • Curb land degradation and stop the spread of desertification across 29 districts. 
  • Enhance green cover to restore ecological stability and protect native biodiversity. 
  • Support carbon absorption goals under India's climate pledges (NDC to UNFCCC). 
  • Revive water bodies and encourage local community participation.

About the Aravalli Range

States Covered: Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat – stretching over 670 km. 

Geographical & Ecological Importance 

  • Among the oldest fold mountain ranges in the world, dating back to the Proterozoic Era. 
  • Acts as a natural wall that prevents the Thar Desert from spreading into the National Capital Region (NCR). 
  • Highest Point: Guru Shikhar (Mount Abu, Rajasthan) – 1,722 metres. 
  • Birthplace of important rivers: 
    • Banas, Sahibi (Yamuna tributaries) 
    • Luni (flows to the Rann of Kutch) 
  • Composed of ancient rock formations and rich in minerals like copper, zinc, and marble. 

Divisions of Aravallis 

  • Sambhar–Sirohi Range (includes Guru Shikhar) 
  • Sambhar–Khetri Range (marked by scattered ridges)
