Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs’ Day 2023

  • In India, Shaheed Diwas, also known as Martyrs' Day, is celebrated on March 23 each year to honor the martyrs who gave their lives for India's freedom.
  • This day denotes the commemoration of the execution of three Indian political dissidents Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru in 1931.

World Meteorological Day 2023

  • World Meteorological Day is observed annually on March 23 to commemorate the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)'s official establishment in 1950.

‘World Trade Center’ To Come Up in Kolkata’s Salt Lake.

  • Scott Wang, Vice President of the Asia Pacific region for the World Trade Center's Association (WTCA), and Saket Mohta, Managing Director, and Chairman of the Merlin Group, respectively, signed the project's License Agreement.
  • The project, which is being built in Salt Lake, West Bengal, is expected to cost around Rs 1,500 crore to build.

  • At Devasthal, Uttarakhand, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, officially opened Asia's largest 4-meter International Liquid Mirror Telescope in the presence of Lieutenant Gen., Retired the Governor of Uttarakhand is Gurmeet Singh.
  • The 4-meter International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT) has been declared operational by the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), allowing for the observation of the deep space sky.

Arnab Banerjee named as MD & CEO of CEAT

  • Following the resignation of Anant Goenka, the tire manufacturer CEAT has appointed Arnab Banerjee as its new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
  • According to the company's corporate filing, Banerjee's two-year term as MD and CEO will begin on April 1, 2023.
  • At the close of business on March 31, 2023, Anant Goenka will step down as MD and CEO and take on the role of vice chairman and non-executive non-independent director, subject to approval from members and other relevant authorities.

Overview of Trade Infrastructure for Export Scheme

  • In 2017, the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry launched the Trade Infrastructure for Export Scheme (TIES) to assist Central and State Government agencies in developing the necessary infrastructure for export growth.
  • Since the ASIDE (Assistance to States for the Development of Export Infrastructure and Related Activities) Scheme was disassociated in 2015, State Governments have been repeatedly requesting assistance from the Centre in the development of export infrastructure.
  • States can use the scheme through their implementing agencies, and it covers infrastructure projects with a lot of export connections like border haats, land customs stations, quality testing and certification labs, cold chains, trade promotion centers, export warehousing and packaging, special economic zones (SEZs), and ports and airports with cargo terminuses.

Pennaiyar River Dispute

  • As a result of unsuccessful negotiations, the deadline set by the Supreme Court for the establishment of an Inter-State River Water Dispute Tribunal to settle the dispute over the Pennaiyar River has passed.
  • The Pennaiyar River, also known as Thenpannai, is the second largest of the 12 river basins that lie between the Pennar and Cauvery basins and flow eastward.
  • The waterway moves through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and purges into the Sound of Bengal. The Inter-State River Water Disputes Act of 1956 established a Tribunal for the resolution of water disputes.
  • Following publication in the central government's official gazette, the Tribunal's decisions are final and enforceable in the same manner as those of the Supreme Court.

World’s Top 10 Billionaires list

  • Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries and the richest man in Asia, is the only Indian to be ranked among the top 10 billionaires worldwide, according to the Hurun Global Rich List, which was recently released.
  • Ambani maintained his position as the ninth richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $82 billion, despite having seen his wealth decrease by 20%.
  • The report, titled "The 2023 M3M Hurun Global Rich List," was created by research platform Hurun and real estate company M3M.

Govt approves installation of ‘Statue of Knowledge’

  • In Latur, Maharashtra, a 70-foot-tall statue of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar will be unveiled on April 13.
  • Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Ramdas Athawale, in addition to former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and state minister Sanjay Bansode, will attend the unveiling ceremony.

  • In terms of the number of billionaires, India comes in third on the 2023 M3M Hurun Global Rich List. However, the number of billionaires in China is almost five times greater than in India.
  • India comes in third in this category, with 105 self-made billionaires, according to the list. According to the Hurun list, these billionaires have a total wealth of $381 billion.
  • India now makes up 8% of the world's billionaires, up from 4.9% five years ago. Over the past five years, India's share of the world's billionaires has been consistently rising. 57% of these billionaires were made by themselves.
