World Milk Day 2023

  • World Milk Day, is observed on June 1, every year.
  • In 2001 United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) observed this day with the aim of encouraging global milk consumption and highlighting its advantages.
  • The theme of World Milk Day 2023 is “Showcasing how dairy is reducing its environmental footprint, while also providing nutritious foods and livelihoods.”

India-EU Connectivity Conference

  • The Ministry of External Affairs, EU Delegation to India, and the Asian Confluence will be collaborating to host the India-EU Connectivity Conference in Meghalaya.
  • This conference aims to examine opportunities for enhancing connectivity investments in the North Eastern States of India and fostering stronger connectivity with neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.

India Approves World’s Largest Food Storage Scheme

  • The Union Cabinet has approved one lakh crore rupee scheme to increase grain storage capacity in cooperative sector. 
  • One of the main objectives of this program is to tackle the issues related to insufficient storage facilities, which frequently result in the spoilage and forced sale of food grains by farmers.
  • The government aims to address this by constructing warehouses with a capacity of 2,000 tonnes in every block throughout the country, with the intention of minimizing the damage to food grains caused by the absence of adequate storage infrastructure.

BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meet

  • In Cape Town, the foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) have convened for a two-day conference to deliberate on a range of matters, encompassing local currency trading and the formulation of a peace plan for the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
  • South Africa is hosting the meeting, which will set the stage for the forthcoming 15th BRICS Summit slated for August.

India’s GDP Growth Accelerates to 6.1%

  • During the January-March quarter of 2022-23, India's economy demonstrated notable expansion, exhibiting a GDP growth rate of 6.1%.
  • This upturn was primarily fueled by enhanced performance in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and construction, resulting in an annual growth rate of 7.2%.
  • The strong growth propelled the Indian economy to reach $3.3 trillion, laying the foundation for pursuing the ambitious target of $5 trillion in the forthcoming years.

Razorpay Launches ‘Turbo UPI’

  • Razorpay, has unveiled a payment solution called 'Turbo UPI' for the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) network.
  • In partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Axis Bank, Razorpay intends to simplify the payment experience for users by enabling direct payments without redirecting them to a third-party UPI app.

Government to Sell up to 3% Stake in Coal India

  • As per a recent regulatory filing, the Indian government has declared its plan to divest a stake of up to 3% in Coal India Ltd through the offer for sale (OFS) mechanism.
  • The OFS will be accessible to both retail and non-retail investors on June 1 and 2, presenting an opportunity to participate in the sale of shares of the well-known coal producer.
