Why in News?  

On May 26, 2026, Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) removed key procedural restrictions on leather exports, easing port limitations and CLRI certification to boost ease of doing business and support MSME exporters.  

About Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT)   

  • The DGFT functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry as a key agency overseeing India’s external trade.  
  • It is responsible for drafting and executing the country's Foreign Trade Policy (FTP).  
  • Based in New Delhi, DGFT operates through a network of 24 regional offices across India.  
  • Prior to the economic reforms of 1991, it was known as the Chief Controller of Imports & Exports (CCI&E).  
  • After liberalisation, it was restructured and renamed as DGFT to serve as a facilitator of international trade.
