Why in News? 

India has made its debut in the top 100 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index, ranking 99th out of 167 countries, according to the 2025 Sustainable Development Report (SDR). 

SDG Report Highlights 

  • India’s Achievement 
    • For the first time, India has entered the top 100 in the SDG Index. 
    • Ranked 99th out of 193 countries for its progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 
  • Global SDG Status 
    • Overall progress on SDGs has stalled globally. 
    • Only 17% of the 17 goals set in 2015 are expected to be achieved by 2030. 
  • Top Performing Countries: European countries, especially Nordic nations, lead the SDG Index 
    • 1st: Finland 
    • 2nd: Sweden 
    • 3rd: Denmark 
  • Leading Nations in Key Groups 
    • Brazil ranks highest among G20 nations (25th). 
    • Chile leads among OECD countries (7th). 

UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) 

  • Establishment: Founded in 2012 by the United Nations (UN) as a global initiative.
  • Main Objective: To advance practical solutions for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at both national and global levels.
  • Key Focus: It focuses on mobilising expertise by connecting universities, research institutions, and national laboratories to identify and develop solutions for tackling critical sustainability challenges. 
  • Secretariat: The SDSN Secretariat operates from Paris (France), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and New York (USA).
