Why in News? 

The Government of India has officially launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI) under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).  

About the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme (GHCI) 

  • Launched Under: National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) 
  • Objective: To develop a robust framework for the certification of green hydrogen (GH) production and to ensure transparency, traceability, and market credibility. 
  • Ministry Concerned: Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) 
  • Nodal Authority: Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) 
  • Purpose: 
    • To standardize methodologies for measurement, monitoring, reporting, onsite verification, and certification of green hydrogen and its derivatives. 

 

About National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) 

  • Launch Year: 2023 
  • Aim: To make India a Global Hub for the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen. 
  • Target: Achieve 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) per annum of green hydrogen by 2030. 
  • Key Components: 
    • SIGHT Programme (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) 
    • Green Hydrogen Hubs 
  • Strategies: 
    • Create demand by promoting exports and domestic consumption 
    • Tackle supply-side constraints 
    • Develop a certification framework
