Why in News? 

The Indian Navy inducted INS Nistar, its first indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel, from Hindustan Shipyard Ltd., Visakhapatnam. 

What is INS Nistar? 

  • INS Nistar is India’s first indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV). 
  • Built by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. and classified under Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) norms. 
  • Name ‘Nistar’ means rescue/liberation/salvation in Sanskrit.

  • Length: 118 meters. 
  • Weight: ~10,000 tons. 
  • Diving capability 
    • Saturation dives up to 300 meters. 
    • Side diving stage for 75 meters. 
  • Equipped with advanced diving equipment and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for operations up to 1000 meters. 

Strategic Role 

  • Acts as the Mother Ship for Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV) to rescue submariners during emergencies. 
  • Enhances India’s capability in deep-sea rescue and underwater operations.
