About International Day for Biological Diversity
- The United Nations General Assembly declared 22nd May as the International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) in 2000.
- The date marks the adoption of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) in 1992, a legally binding treaty to conserve biodiversity.
- India is a signatory to the UNCBD and implemented the Biological Diversity Act in 2002.
- The term biodiversity was first coined by Walter G. Rosen in 1985, referring to the variety of all living organisms.
- The UN Decade on Biodiversity (2011–2020) aimed to promote the global strategic plan for biodiversity conservation.
Major Targets – “30 by 30” and Beyond:
- Refers to the goal of protecting 30% of the world’s land and oceans by 2030.
