Why in News? 

The National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) has reported significant damage to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) barrages after the 2023 flooding incident. NDSA, the national safety regulator for large dams, was set up under the National Dam Safety Act, 2021. 

About Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project 

• KLIP is a multi-purpose irrigation project located on the Godavari River in Kaleshwaram, Telangana. 
• The Godavari River, also known as Dakshin Ganga, is the largest river in Peninsular India. 
• River Source and Flow: The Godavari River rises from the slopes of the Western Ghats in the Nasik district of Maharashtra and drains into the Bay of Bengal. 
• World's Largest Multi-stage Lift Irrigation Project: KLIP is set to become the world's largest multi-stage lift irrigation project. 
• In a lift irrigation project, water is lifted using pumps or surge pools to the highest point of the project, and then distributed to the beneficiary fields.
