About  Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project

  • The Kaleshwaram Project is a multi-purpose irrigation scheme on the Godavari River in Bhupalpally, Telangana.
  • It provides water for irrigation and drinking to about 45 lakh acres in 20 of Telangana’s 31 districts, including Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
  • It is the world’s largest multi-stage lift irrigation project.
  • The farthest upstream point of the project is at the confluence of the Pranhita and Godavari rivers.
  • The Pranhita River is formed by smaller tributaries such as the Wardha, Painganga, and Wainganga rivers, which together form the seventh-largest drainage basin in the Indian subcontinent.
  • The project has seven links and 28 packages, spanning about 500 km across 13 districts.
  • Its canal network extends over 1,800 km.
  • The project aims to supply 240 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet) of water.
  • This water is allocated for irrigation, municipal water supply to Hyderabad, industrial use, and drinking water for nearby villages.
