Why in News?
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is set to inaugurate the National Conference of Estimates Committees of Parliament and State/UT Legislatures in Mumbai.
About Speaker of the Lok Sabha
- The Speaker is the presiding officer and constitutional head of the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament).
- Elected by Lok Sabha members; only sitting members are eligible.
- Maintains order, conducts proceedings, and ensures smooth functioning of the House.
- Represents Lok Sabha in its interactions with the President, Rajya Sabha, and external bodies.
Election and Tenure
- Elected soon after the first sitting; date fixed by the President.
- Remains in office till the dissolution of Lok Sabha or earlier by:
- Ceasing to be a member,
- Resignation,
- Removal by a resolution passed by an effective majority.
Removal of Speaker
- Requires a resolution supported by at least 50 members.
- 14-day notice is mandatory.
- Speaker cannot preside during this process but may participate and vote.
Salary and Allowances
- Decided by Parliament.
- Drawn from the Consolidated Fund of India.
