Why in News? 

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is set to inaugurate the National Conference of Estimates Committees of Parliament and State/UT Legislatures in Mumbai. 

About Speaker of the Lok Sabha 

  • The Speaker is the presiding officer and constitutional head of the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament). 
  • Elected by Lok Sabha members; only sitting members are eligible. 
  • Maintains order, conducts proceedings, and ensures smooth functioning of the House. 
  • Represents Lok Sabha in its interactions with the President, Rajya Sabha, and external bodies. 

Election and Tenure 

  • Elected soon after the first sitting; date fixed by the President. 
  • Remains in office till the dissolution of Lok Sabha or earlier by: 
    • Ceasing to be a member, 
    • Resignation, 
    • Removal by a resolution passed by an effective majority. 

Removal of Speaker 

  • Requires a resolution supported by at least 50 members. 
  • 14-day notice is mandatory. 
  • Speaker cannot preside during this process but may participate and vote. 

Salary and Allowances 

  • Decided by Parliament. 
  • Drawn from the Consolidated Fund of India. 

Some Facts regarding Lok Sabha Speaker: 

  • G.V. Mavalankar was the first Speaker of the Lok Sabha (1952–1956). 
  • Meira Kumar was the first woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha (2009–2014). 
  • The longest-serving Speaker was Balram Jakhar (1980–1989). 
  • Om Birla is the current Speaker (17th Lok Sabha), in office since June 19, 2019.
