About National Broadcasting Day

• Observed on: 23rd July every year in India. 
• Historical Significance 
  • On July 23, 1927, the first-ever radio broadcast in India was aired from the Bombay Station under the Indian Broadcasting Company. 
  • On June 8, 1936, the Indian State Broadcasting Service was renamed All India Radio (AIR). 
• Role in Nation-Building 
  • During the freedom struggle, radio helped spread information and unity. 
  • After independence, it promoted literacy, health awareness and agricultural knowledge, especially in rural areas.
    
• Further Developments 
  • In 1956, the name Akashvani was adopted for the national broadcaster. 
  • In 1957, the Vividh Bharati Service was launched, mainly featuring popular film music.
    
• Contribution 
  • Since 1927, radio has informed, educated and entertained the masses. 
  • Akashvani continues to follow its motto, that is "Bahujana Hitaya, Bahujana Sukhaya" (For the welfare and happiness of all).
