National Mission for Clean Ganga

Miscellaneous

Why in News?

The 63rd National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) meeting approved projects to improve environmental flow, water quality, and ecosystem restoration in Ganga’s tributaries, including a sewerage project in Agra.

About National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG)

  • NMCG: It is a society under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, working to prevent pollution and revive the river Ganga by ensuring continuous water flow and better water quality.
  • Background: NMCG was the implementing agency of the now-dissolved National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA). Since 2016, the National Ganga Council has taken over overall river management.
  • Objectives: To reduce pollution and rejuvenate the river using a river basin approach, ensuring ecological flow and sustainable development along the Ganga.
  • Structure: NMCG has two main bodies—the Governing Council and the Executive Committee—both led by the Director General. The Executive Committee can approve projects up to ₹1000 crore. State-level groups help implement projects locally.
  • Ganga River System
  • The Ganga River begins as the Bhagirathi, which is fed by the Gangotri Glacier.
  • It meets the Alaknanda River at Devprayag in Uttarakhand, marking the official start of the Ganga.
  • At Haridwar, the river flows out of the mountains and enters the plains.
  • Along its course, the Ganga is joined by several tributaries from the Himalayas, including major rivers like the Yamuna, Ghaghara, Gandak, and Kosi.
