Why in the News?
The Delhi Government adopted the PM-SHRI scheme by signing an MoU with the Ministry of Education. The ₹27,360 crore scheme aims to upgrade over 14,500 schools, with 60% funding from the Centre. Tamil Nadu and Kerala may join soon, while West Bengal opposes the scheme's prefix. Delhi awaits ₹330 crore in pending Samagra Shiksha funds.
PM-SHRI (Prime Minister’s Schools for Rising India) Scheme
- Launched: 2022
- Objective: To enhance the quality of education in government schools, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
- Funding: The Centre will contribute 60% of the funding for upgrading the schools, while states will cover the remaining 40%.
- In northeastern states, the Centre will provide 90% of the funding.
- It aims to upgrade more than 14,500 schools across India, providing them with better facilities, resources and teaching standards.
- It operates under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, which covers various funding needs of government schools, including teacher salaries, uniforms and books.
- The scheme has a total outlay of ₹27,360 crore spread over five years.
