About
PM-SYM ensures universal pension coverage for unorganized workers, enhancing India's social security system.
- The unorganized sector contributes nearly 50% to the nation’s GDP.
- Over 30.51 crore unorganized workers are registered on the e-Shram portal (2024).
- Ministry: Introduced as a Central Sector Scheme in 2019 by the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
- Objective: A voluntary and contributory pension scheme offering a minimum monthly pension of ₹3,000 after 60 years of age.
- Pension Fund Manager: Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
- Enrollment: It can be done at Common Service Centres (CSCs) or via the Maandhan portal.
- Subscriber Contribution: Payments are made through an auto-debit facility linked to a savings bank account or Jan-Dhan account.
Additional Features
- Family Pension: If a subscriber passes away while receiving the pension, their spouse is eligible to receive 50% of the pension amount.
- If the subscriber dies before turning 60 after making regular contributions,
- The spouse can either continue the scheme by continuing contributions or exit as per the withdrawal rules.

- Donate-a-Pension Module: Encourages employers to contribute premiums on behalf of their employees to boost enrollment.
Implementation and Current Status
- Coverage: Implemented in 36 States/UTs.
- Enrollments: Around 46,12,330 (as of March 2025).
- Top 3 States: Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra.
