Why in the News?
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared and subsequently lifted emergency martial law after intense backlash from lawmakers and public criticism. The measure was initially introduced to counter alleged threats from North Korea’s communist forces and opposition groups. However, within hours, the National Assembly voted to end the declaration, and the President’s Cabinet approved its termination. Troops deployed under martial law have since returned to their bases, restoring normalcy.
