Why in News 

Tripura was declared India’s third fully literate state on June 23, 2025 after Mizoram and Goa. The announcement was made by the Union Education Ministry at an event in Rabindra Bhavan, attended by Chief Minister Manik Saha. 

Historical Background 

  • Former princely state ruled by the Manikya dynasty. 
  • Merged with India on 15 October 1949. 
  • Became a full-fledged state in 1972. 

Geography 

  • Located in northeast India, bordered by Bangladesh on 3 sides. 
  • Shares borders with Assam and Mizoram. 
  • Third smallest Indian state; mostly hilly and forested. 

 Rivers and Water Bodies 

  • Major rivers: Gomati, Manu, Khowai, Dhalai. 
  • Famous lake: Dumbur Lake (on Gomati River).

  • Known for bamboo & cane handicrafts, and tribal dances like Hojagiri. 
  • High literacy rate and 19 tribal communities. 
  • Strong cultural blend of tribal and Bengali traditions.

Neermahal: Lake palace in Rudrasagar Lake. 

Ujjayanta Palace: Heritage museum in Agartala.
