Why in News?
- World Blood Donor Day is observed annually on 14th June every year.
About World Blood Donor Day
- Objective: To raise awareness on the need for a safe blood supply, appreciate unpaid donors, promote regular donation, build community solidarity, and urge government investment in blood programmes.
- Theme (2025): “Give Blood, Give Hope”
- History: First celebrated in 2004 by WHO, IFRC, ISBT, and IFBDO; observed on June 14 (birthdate of Karl Landsteiner, discoverer of the ABO blood group system); now marked in over 190 countries.
- Eligibility & Benefits: Donors must be 18–65 years, weigh ≥45 kg, with Hb ≥12.5 g/dL and good health.
