About Wular Lake
- Wular Lake is the largest freshwater lake in India and the second largest in Asia.
- Located in the Bandipore district of Jammu and Kashmir.
- It is fed by the Jhelum River and lies at an altitude of 1,580 meters, at the foothills of the Haramuk Mountain.
- The lake covers an area of 200 sq. km, stretching 24 km in length and 10 km in breadth.
- It was formed due to tectonic activity.
- Believed to be a remnant of the ancient Satisar Lake.
- A small island called ‘Zaina Lank’ is located at its centre, built by King Zainul-Abi-Din.
- In 1990, Wular Lake was declared a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.
- In Kashmir, the lotus flower holds deep cultural importance. Often called the "Queen of Kashmir," it symbolizes resilience, beauty, and purity.
