About ASEAN
- It is a regional organization which was established to promote political and social stability.
- Established: 1967 with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration).
- Founding Members: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
- Member Nations: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei (1984), Vietnam (1995), Laos (1997), Myanmar (1997), Cambodia (1999).
- Secretariat: Indonesia, Jakarta.
- Motto: “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”.
- Chairmanship: Chairmanship of ASEAN rotates annually.
- Based on the alphabetical order of the English names of Member States.
- ASEAN Summit: The supreme policy making body of ASEAN.
- The Summit meets twice a year.
- It sets the direction for ASEAN policies and objectives.
- ASEAN Plus Three:
- It is a forum that functions as a coordinator of co-operation between the ASEAN and the three East Asian nations of China, South Korea, and Japan.
- ASEAN Plus Six:
- The group includes ASEAN Plus Three as well as India, Australia, and New Zealand.
