Agnipath Scheme: Pathway for Absorption of All Agniveers

Current Affairs

Why in News?

The Union Cabinet (4 November 2026) approved a pathway for all Agniveers to be absorbed into the Indian Defence Forces.

  • Tier 1: Top 25% Agniveers, selected on merit, get regular service right after the initial four-year term.
  • Tier 2: The remaining 75% may opt for a two-year extension (years 5 and 6); those meeting criteria and consenting are then enrolled as regular soldiers.
  • Benefits in second phase: Higher remuneration, enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits.
  • Basis of selection: Four-year assessment of performance, physical fitness, motivation and technological adaptability.

Agnipath Scheme

  • Launched in June 2022 for short-term recruitment of soldiers, sailors and airmen below officer rank; recruits are called Agniveers.
  • Original tenure of four years, with retention of up to 25% of each batch in regular service.
  • Seva Nidhi: a lump-sum exit package built from contributions by the Agniveer and the Government.
