Why in the News?
The Union Cabinet approved the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan with a budget of ₹79,156 crore to improve the socio-economic conditions of tribal communities. One key intervention provides up to ₹5 lakh per tribal household to develop tourist homestays, enhancing livelihoods under the Swadesh Darshan scheme in tribal-majority villages and districts.
Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PMJUGA)
- It is a centrally sponsored scheme for the welfare of tribal families in tribal-majority villages and aspirational districts.
- Objective: It envisions fulfilling critical gaps in social infrastructure like health, education, livelihood, through different schemes of Government of India by convergence and outreach.
- It builds on the successes of PMJANMAN (Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan) to ensure comprehensive outreach and development of tribal communities.
- It will cover around 63,000 villages benefiting more than 5 crore tribal people.
- It will cover 549 districts and 2,740 blocks in 30 states and Union territories, according to an official statement.
