Inauguration of New Parliament Building

  • On May 28, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the new Parliament building.
  • The new Parliament building is situated in the Central Vista area of New Delhi.
  • It has the seating capacity for 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 384 members in the Rajya Sabha.
  • Departing from the circular layout of the old building, the new triangular design optimizes space utilization and spans an expansive area of approximately 65,000 square meters.
  • The building has been designed by Ahmedabad-based HCP Design, Planning and Management, and constructed by Tata Projects Limited.
  • PM Modi installed the sacred 'Sengol' in the Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the Speaker's chair, after performing puja.

International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2023

  • Every year, on May 29th, the world observes the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
  • This significant day is dedicated to recognizing and pay tribute to the invaluable contributions and sacrifices made by United Nations (UN) peacekeepers in their tireless efforts to uphold global peace and security.
  • It also serves as a solemn remembrance for those brave individuals who have tragically lost their lives while serving in the line of duty.
  • This year marks the 75th anniversary of International Day of UN peacemakers.
  • The theme for this year is “Peace begins with me”.

Northeast's First Vande Bharat Express

  • On May 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the inaugural journey of the first Vande Bharat Express in the Northeast region.
  • The Vande Bharat Express, destined for the northeast, will commence its service between New Jalpaiguri Station in West Bengal and Guwahati in Assam.
  • It will be the first Vande Bharat Express in the Northeast, third in Bengal, and 18th pan-India.
  • The New Jalpaiguri to Guwahati Vande Bharat Express will cover a distance of 410 kilometers in six hours.

Sudarshan Shakti Exercise

  • The Sapta Shakti Command of the Indian Army conducted exercise ‘Sudarshan Shakti 2023’ along the western borders in Rajasthan and Punjab.
  • It aimed at starting the transformation of the forces into a modern, lean, and agile fighting combination capable of leveraging new-age technologies.
  • Sudarshan Shakti 2023” highlights the commitment of the South Western Command and its associated units towards maintaining a high level of operational preparedness and capability to fight a technology intensive future conflict.

GDP Expected to Grow 6 - 6.5% in FY24

  • India’s GDP is expected to grow in the 6-6.5 per cent range in FY24, with agriculture growth continuing at a healthy pace, a recovery in industrial growth and the services sector remaining resilient.
  • The projection takes into account an expected slowdown in the global economy, which may impact the external sector, and the continued resilience of the domestic economy.

Monaco Grand Prix 2023

  • Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix by starting on pole and leading all 78 laps.
  • Verstappen increased his lead in the Drivers' Championship to 39 points with his fourth victory of the season.

IMPRINT India

  • The collaborative initiative between the Department of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Human Resource Development in India is known as the IMPRINT India scheme. IMPRINT stands for "Impacting Research Innovation and Technology."
  • The IMPRINT initiative, supported by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), marks a significant milestone as the first joint effort involving Pan-IIT and IISc to tackle the critical science and engineering challenges faced by India.
  • This pioneering initiative is driven by the objective of enabling, empowering, and strengthening the nation for inclusive growth and self-reliance. With a two-fold mandate, IMPRINT focuses on:

(a) Formulating a new engineering education policy

(b) Charting a roadmap to address engineering challenges

  • IMPRINT serves as a guiding framework, directing research endeavors towards areas that are predominantly socially relevant.

Hydrogen Power Project in Nepal

  • Nepal has given its permit to India's Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) limited to foster a second hydropower project in the country.
  • SJVN is also developing a run-of-river 900 MW Arun -III hydroelectric project that will be completed in 2024 on the Arun River in Eastern Nepal.
  • The draft project development agreement that will be signed with India's state-owned SJVN to develop the 669 MW Lower Arun Hydropower project in eastern Nepal.
