Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023

  • The Nobel Prize 2023 in Chemistry has been awarded to Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots.
  • Quantum dots have unique properties and now spread their light from television screens and LED lamps.
  • They catalyse chemical reactions, and their clear light can illuminate tumour tissue which is helpful for a surgeon.

Neeraj Chopra Wins Gold in Javelin Throw at Asian Games 2023

  • At the Asian Games 2023, which took place at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Park Main Stadium in the People's Republic of China.
  • India achieved an impressive 1-2 victory in the Men's Javelin throw competition.
  • Neeraj Chopra secured the gold medal, while Kishore Kumar Jena won the silver medal.

RBI Appoints Muneesh Kapur as Executive Director

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Muneesh Kapur as an Executive Director on October 3, 2023.
  • Prior to his promotion as Executive Director, Muneesh Kapur served as Adviser-in-Charge within the Monetary Policy Department.
  • Furthermore, he held the position of Secretary to the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), where he played a pivotal role in shaping the country's monetary policies.

UNCTAD’s Report 2023

  • In the trade and development report 2023, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has raised its economic growth forecast for India in 2023 to 6.6%, up from the previous estimate of 6%.
  • The report also envisions a dip in India's growth to 6.2% in 2024.

World Teachers Day 2023

  • World Teachers' Day, commemorated every year on the 5th of October, serves as a worldwide event devoted to acknowledging the priceless contributions of teachers to society.
  • The theme for World Teachers’ Day 2023 is “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage”.

Nobel Prize in Physics 2023

  • The 2023 Nobel Prize for Physics was shared by three scientists Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier for their “experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses for the study of electron dynamics in matter.”
  • The laureates have been awarded the Prize for experiments that have allowed scientists to produce ultra-short pulses of light, with which they can finally ‘see’ directly into the super-fast world of electrons.
