World Oceans Day 2023

  • Each year on 8 June, World Oceans Day is observed with the aim of raising awareness about the crucial role of oceans and the need to protect and conserve their valuable resources.
  • World Oceans Day is commemorated annually with a designated theme, and this year, the theme for World Oceans Day 2023 is "Planet Ocean: The Tides are Changing."

Newly Launched Schemes for Wetlands and Mangrove Conservation

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the occasion of World Environment Day by unveiling two schemes, namely Amrit Dharohar and MISHTI (Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes).
  • These initiatives have been designed to rejuvenate India's wetlands and mangroves, promoting their conservation and sustainable utilization.

Amrit Dharohar Yojana

  • By the Amrit Dharohar Yojana, the conservation of the current Ramsar sites will be guaranteed, with active involvement from the public.
  • These sites will be transformed into hubs of eco-tourism, offering a plethora of green employment opportunities to numerous individuals.
  • Amrit Dharohar aims to achieve sustainable ecosystem development with the help of local communities over the next three years.

MISHTI Yojana

  • The MISHTI scheme will help revive and protect the mangrove ecosystem in the country.
  • It aims to extensively survey and assess potential areas for the expansion of mangroves, spanning approximately 540 square kilometers.
  • This initiative will be implemented over a period of five years, commencing from the fiscal year 2024, across 11 states and two union territories.

Tata Group has Retained its Title of India’s Most Valuable Brand

  • The Tata Group has maintained its position as the most valuable brand in India, experiencing impressive growth in brand value with a remarkable increase of 10.3 percent to reach $26.4 billion.
  • This achievement marks the first instance of an Indian brand surpassing the $25 billion mark in brand value and securing a place among the top 100 brands in the Brand Finance Global 500 2023 ranking, which evaluates the world's 500 most valuable brands on an annual basis.

India and US Agreed to Set Up a Monitoring Group on High-Tech Trade

  • India and the United States have agreed to set up a monitoring group to review progress in deepening cooperation in the bilateral high-tech trade and technology partnership.
  • The decision was taken at the inaugural meeting of the India-US Strategic Trade Dialogue (IUSSTD) in Washington D.C., led by Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra.
  • The meeting was co-led by Alan Estevez, Under Secretary for Industry and Security in the US Department of Commerce, and Victoria Nuland, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs in the US Department of State.

PM-KUSUM Scheme

  • The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) Scheme, launched in 2019, has the primary objective of ensuring energy security for farmers in India and promoting the adoption of clean energy in the agricultural sector.
  • The scheme aligns with India's commitment to increasing the proportion of non-fossil fuel sources in the country's installed electric power capacity.
  • To expedite the implementation of solar projects on agricultural lands, the central government is contemplating the integration of the PM-KUSUM scheme with the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF).
  • This initiative aims to provide farmers with access to more affordable loans for establishing solar projects and procuring necessary equipment.

  • Janardan Prasad has assumed the role of Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), taking over from Dr. S. Raju, who served in the position since April 2022.
