Why in the News?

The Indian Army successfully conducted the Multilateral Annual Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise, 'Sanyukt Vimochan 2024' at Ahmedabad and Porbandar on 18th –19th November 2024. General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff attended this significant event which showcased India's disaster response readiness.

About EXERCISE 'SANYUKT VIMOCHAN

  • Participants:
    • Indian Armed Forces: Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard.
    • Other Agencies: National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA), Meteorological Department, FICCI, State and Central Agencies, National and State Disaster Response Forces (NDRF & SDRF).
    • International Participation: 15 senior officials from nine Friendly Foreign Countries (GCC, Indian Ocean Region, South East Asia).
  • Key Activities:
    • Tabletop Exercise: Focused on disaster response strategies for a simulated cyclone scenario in Gujarat’s coastal region.
    • Multi-Agency Capability Demonstration: Held at Chowpatty Beach, Porbandar on 19th November.
      • Simulated cyclone scenario: Coordinated logistics, rapid response, and disaster management strategies.
      • Casualty evacuation and rehabilitation demonstrated using rescue assets.
      • Industrial Display: Showcased Indian defence industries' innovations in disaster response technology.
  • Objectives:
    • Improve interagency coordination and response capabilities.
    • Identify gaps in disaster relief strategies and enhance joint mechanisms for swift implementation.
    • Promote self-reliance in disaster response technologies under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
