Why in News? 

The Lokpal of India has adopted a new motto: “Empower citizens, expose corruption.” 

About Lokpal: Lokpal is a statutory body formed under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013 to investigate corruption complaints against certain public officials. 

Structure 

• It consists of a chairperson and 8 Members (4 must be Judicial Members). 
• The Chairperson can be a former Chief Justice of India, Supreme Court Judge, or a qualified eminent person. 
• Judicial Members must be former Supreme Court Judges or Chief Justices of High Courts. 
• At least 50% of Members must be from SC/ST/OBC, minorities, or women. 

Appointment 

• Members are appointed by the President on the advice of a Selection Committee: 
  • Prime Minister (Chairperson) 
  • Lok Sabha Speaker 
  • Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha 
  • Chief Justice of India or a Judge nominated by him 
  • One eminent jurist 
• Term: 5 years or until 70 years of age, whichever is earlier. 
• Salaries match those of the Chief Justice and Supreme Court Judges.
