Naming of Arunachal Pradesh Peak After 6th Dalai Lama is Illegal

World Affairs

Why in the News?

China has criticized India for naming a newly climbed peak in Arunachal Pradesh after the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso. The National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) honored the Dalai Lama, born in Mon Tawang, by naming the 20,942-foot peak. China claims this area, Zangnan, as its territory and deems India's designation of "Arunachal Pradesh" illegal.

About NIMAS

  • Established: 30th May 2013
  • Location: Dirang of the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • It is an autonomous institute under the Indian Ministry of Defence, which provides specialized training in mountain rescue, mountaineering and adventure sports.
