Total Lunar Eclipse and ‘Blood Moon’
Geography
Why in News?
A total lunar eclipse will occur on 7th September 2025, when the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow, turning copper red (Blood Moon, which happens 2-3 times a year) due to the perfect alignment of the Earth, Sun, and Moon, blocking direct sunlight.
Blood Moon
- A reddish or coppery Moon during a total lunar eclipse, when direct sunlight is blocked, and light passing through Earth’s atmosphere is refracted and scattered.
- Blue wavelengths are scattered, while red and orange wavelengths pass through, giving the Moon its deep red or reddish-orange color.
