Carbon Capture Technology
Science & Technology
Why in News?
The Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), under Coal India Ltd., announced results of the Carbon Capture Technology Hackathon held from May 12 to June 10, 2025.
About Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
- Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a technology that captures CO₂ emissions from sources like power plants and factories and stores them underground.
- It is different from Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), which removes CO₂ already present in the atmosphere.
Types of Carbon Capture
- Post-combustion: CO₂ is captured after fuel is burned using chemical solvents.
- Pre-combustion: CO₂ is removed before burning, producing hydrogen as a clean fuel.
- Oxyfuel combustion: Fuel is burned in pure oxygen, producing mainly CO₂ and water, which are easier to separate.
Preparing Through MCQs
What is the main objective of CCS technology?
(1) To generate solar energy
(2) To trap methane gas underground
(3) To capture and store CO₂ emissions from power and industrial sources
(4) To remove dust particles from the air
Answer: (3) To capture and store CO₂ emissions from power and industrial sources
