E-Zero FIR

Indian Polity

Why in News?

The new e-Zero FIR initiative will automatically convert cyber financial crimes above Rs 10 lakh and registered on the 1930 helpline of the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), into FIRs.

About E-Zero FIR

  • The e-Zero FIR initiative supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a 'Cyber Secure Bharat'.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed its implementation at an Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) meeting to help victims recover lost money from cyber financial crimes.
  • The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and Helpline 1930 enable easy reporting and quick action on cybercrime complaints.

 What is Zero FIR?

  • A Zero FIR is a First Investigation Report registered regardless of where the crime happened.
  • This prevents police from refusing to register a complaint due to lack of jurisdiction.
  • The FIR is then sent to the correct police station to start the investigation.
  • Introduced after the 2012 Nirbhaya case, based on the Justice Verma Committee’s recommendation, it legally requires police to act quickly without delay.
  • The main goal is to help victims file complaints easily and ensure fast police response without unnecessary hurdles.
