Karnataka won Santosh Trophy

  • In a pulsating final at the King Fahd International Stadium in the capital of Saudi Arabia, Karnataka defeated Meghalaya 3-2 to end their 54-year wait to win the Santosh Trophy national football championship.
  • Services came in third in the playoffs after defeating Punjab 2-0. Christopher Kamei and PP Shafeel each scored in either half.
  • Services, winners of five of the previous ten editions, took the lead in the seventh minute when Shafeel scored from a distance, and Kamei converted a shot with his left foot from outside the box.

International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness 2023

  • The International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness, which is observed on March 5, helps to better educate the general public about the ways in which efforts to disarm contribute to enhancing peace and security, preventing and ending armed conflicts, and reducing the amount of human suffering caused by weapons.
  • The purpose of the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness is to raise public awareness of and comprehension of disarmament issues, particularly among young people.

Writer Vinod Kumar Shukla wins 2023 PEN/Nabokov Lifetime Achievement Award

  • After decades of writing critically acclaimed novels like Naukar Ki Kameez (1979) and poetry collections like Sab Kuch Hona Bacha Rahega (1992), Vinod Kumar Shukla has been awarded the PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature for lifetime achievement in literature.
  • This award is one of the most coveted literary prizes in the world. PEN America presents the prize each year.
  • The Vladimir Nabokov Literary Foundation and Pen America established the award in 2016 to honour a living author whose work represents the highest level of achievement in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and/or drama and is of lasting originality and consummate craftsmanship. A USD 50,000 cash prize is included in the award.

India’s per capita income doubles since 2014-15 NSO

  • India’s per capita income in nominal terms doubled to Rs 1,72,000 since 2014-15 when the Narendra Modi-led NDA came to power but uneven income distribution remains a challenge.
  • As per the National Statistical Office (NSO), the annual per capita (net national income) at current prices is estimated at Rs 1,72,000 in 2022-23, up from Rs 86,647 in 2014-15, suggesting an increase of about 99 per cent.

31 Indian states have implemented ‘PM CARES for Children’ scheme: ILO-UNICEF report

  • An ILO-UNICEF report on Social Protection for Children said 31 Indian states have implemented the national ‘ PM CARES for Children ‘ scheme launched during the pandemic with 10,793 full orphans (children who have lost both parents) and 151,322 half-orphans (children who have lost one parent) due to the pandemic taking the benefit of the scheme.
  • The ILO-UNICEF report's most important findings:
    • The world's 2.4 billion children require adequate social protection.
    • Regional disparities One billion children live in multidimensional poverty without access to education, health care, housing, nutrition, sanitation, or water. Nearly 1.77 billion children between the ages of 0 and 18 do not have access to a child or family cash benefit.
    • Disparity in gender Children with disabilities or living with a family member with a disability are more likely to be poor.
