High Seas Treaty
- India announced it is in the process of ratifying the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) agreement, also known as the high seas treaty.
- The high seas are areas of the sea outside a country's territorial and internal waters, beyond its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which extends up to 200 nautical miles from the coastline.
- No country has jurisdiction over the resources (living or non-living) on the high seas, and no nation is responsible for their management or protection.
- The concept of high seas is defined by the 1958 Geneva Convention on the High Seas.
Offshore Security Coordination Committee
- The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) chaired the 137th meeting of the Offshore Security Coordination Committee (OSCC) in New Delhi on June 12, 2025.
- The meeting aimed to review the security preparedness of India’s offshore installations and improve joint response mechanisms to protect vital energy infrastructure.
- Emphasis was placed on strengthening coordination among various agencies to tackle emerging challenges and ensure offshore asset security.
- ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani stressed the importance of energy security and the need to safeguard offshore assets for national growth and independence.
- Representatives from the Indian Navy, Air Force, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Petroleum, ONGC, and other key agencies attended the meeting.
