Why in News? 

The Delhi Cabinet approved a subsidy of Rs 30,000 for installing 3 kW rooftop solar panels (Rs 10,000 per kW) under the PM Surya Ghar scheme — the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar program — raising the total subsidy to Rs 1.08 lakh. 

 About PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana 

• Launched on February 15, 2024, this government scheme provides free electricity to Indian households by subsidizing rooftop solar panel installation.  
• The subsidy covers up to 40% of the solar panel cost. 
• It aims to help 1 crore families get up to 300 units of free electricity per month, saving up to Rs 18,000 annually. 
• The scheme is expected to save the government Rs 75,000 crore each year in electricity costs. 
• With a budget of Rs 75,021 crore, it will run until the financial year 2026-27.
