- It was first announced by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) - South Africa in 2010.
- It highlights the need to conserve the five Rhino species namely White Rhino, Black Rhino, Greater One-Horned, Javan and Sumatran Rhino
- The day raises awareness about the critical conservation status of rhinoceroses and the threats they face.
