Why in News?  

The WHO released its first-ever brief titled "Mapping the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Traditional Medicine," highlighting India's global leadership in combining AI with traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Sowa-Rigpa, and Homeopathy.  

India's Vision: AI for All  

India’s efforts reflect PM Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘AI for All’, promoting inclusive digital health innovation and strengthening traditional systems using AI.  

Key Initiatives Highlighted by WHO  

  • Ayurgenomics  
    • Combines Ayurveda with Genomics using AI  
    • Helps predict disease markers  
    • Enables personalized health recommendations based on an individual's Prakriti (body constitution)  
  • Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL)  
    • Launched in 2001, the world's first digital library of traditional medicine  
    • Developed by CSIR and Ministry of AYUSH  
    • Protects India’s traditional knowledge from misuse and patent theft  
  • Ayush Grid  
    • A digital platform launched in 2018 to modernize Ayush systems  
    • Supports services like SAHI Portal (Showcase of Ayurvedic Historical Imprints), NAMASTE Portal (National Ayush Morbidity and Standardized Terminologies Electronic) and Ayush Research Portal (repository of studies and trials).  

Applications of AI in Traditional Medicine   

In India, AI is being used to trace drug action mechanisms and interpret traditional concepts such as Rasa (taste), Guna (qualities), and Virya (potency) through advanced artificial sensors.
