Why in the News?

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized the success of the 'Make in India' initiative on its 10th anniversary. Since its inception, mobile imports have decreased by 85%, while manufacturing jobs saw a 200% increase between 2022 and 2024. The initiative has also enhanced the ease of doing business and attracted substantial Foreign Direct Investment.

Make in India Initiative

  • Launched: 25th September 2014
  • It is being led by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • Objective: To attract foreign investment for new industrialisation and develop the already existing industry base in India to surpass that of China.
  • It aims to transform the country into a leading global manufacturing and investment destination.
  • Four Pillars
    • New Processes: Focus on improving Ease of Doing Business by de-licensing and deregulating industries throughout their lifecycle.
    • New Infrastructure: Development of industrial corridors, enhanced infrastructure, and a streamlined registration system to support industrial growth.
    • New Sectors: Identified 27 sectors in manufacturing, infrastructure, and services, with detailed information available via an interactive portal and brochures.
    • New Mindset: A shift towards a government-industry partnership, where the government acts as a facilitator, not a regulator.
