Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas 

  • Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas is being observed today to mark the events of 25th June 1975 (National Emergency) reflecting on the constitutional developments and challenges during the Emergency period in India.  
  • The day honours those who suffered during the Emergency. 
  • Aims to educate citizens about their constitutional rights and the importance of democracy. 

International Maritime Organization 

  • The International Maritime Organization has expressed concern that the DG Shipping's directive could lead to the early decommissioning of around 700 vessels and the loss of jobs for over 20,000 seafarers 
  • It is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) tasked with ensuring the safety and security of international shipping, as well as the prevention of marine and air pollution caused by ships. 
  • The IMO develops regulations concerning shipping safety, maritime security and environmental protection; however, it does not enforce these rules. Once a member country adopts a regulation, it becomes part of that nation’s domestic legal framework. 
  • Originally established in 1948 as the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organisation (IMCO), it became a UN specialized agency in 1959 and was renamed the IMO in 1982. 
  • Currently, the IMO has 174 member states and is headquartered in London.
